Our Score
Also known as Hoofbeats, this equine collaboration between producer Jean-Jacques Annaud, director Sergei Bodrov and the screenwriter of The Black Stallion, Jeanne Rosenberg, promised much. But it falls at the first hurdle owing to the decision to employ Lukas Haas to articulate the thoughts of Lucky, the colt who survives copper mines, the Namibian wilderness and the rivalry of an older horse to lead his herd to safety at the height of the First World War. The syrupy score of Nicola Piovani only compounds the problem, which is a shame as the young cast, the animals and the scenery are first-rate.

A foal is born in captivity on a cargo ship during the First World War, and is taken to a mining community on the edge of the Kalahari desert. The young horse is befriended by a stable boy, and decides to seek his freedom after they discover an oasis. Family adventure, starring Chase Moore and Maria Geelbooi.
