Our Score
There are few greater pleasures than watching old pros at work, especially in a film that's worthy of them. In this smart and hugely likeable little comedy drama, Al Pacino and Christopher Walken play best buddies and former partners in crime. Fresh from a 28-year prison stretch, Pacino spends his first night of freedom schmoozing with Walken, nostalgically trawling old haunts in a film noir-like cityscape. But there's a hidden agenda: one of them has been pressured into killing the other to settle an old gangland grudge. Pacino and Walken have rarely been better. Nor has Alan Arkin in a pivotal role as the duo's ageing former getaway driver. From start to finish, Stand Up Guys is a pure joy, a film that will linger in the memory long after bigger, more bloated blockbusters have been and gone, and are long forgotten. Sheer class.
