Our Score
Director Terence Fisher was the inspiration behind Hammer's early monster flicks (Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy), but he did his best work on this thrilling adaptation of Dennis Wheatley's 1920s-set story of good v satanic evil. Christopher Lee, on the side of the angels for a change, upgrades from Count Dracula's fangs/cloak combo to goatee, arcane savvy and a decent right hook as the debonair Duc de Richelieu, who's forced into drastic action to save a friend's soul from Charles Gray's coven of devil worshippers. I Am Legend author Richard Matheson - tapping the 60s fad for the occult which reached its apogee with The Exorcist five years later - conjures up an intelligent and pacey script to match the menacing, shiver-inducing atmosphere, while Lee (in his favourite Hammer film) is at his most powerfully patrician in the face of Gray's vulpine villainy. In a refreshing change from using monsters of lore and literature as instruments of terror, this Hammer classic harnesses unearthly forces and hellish entities like the Goat of Mendes and the Angel of Death to chill the blood. The result is riveting.
