Our Score
Teens who inhabit a ruined, post-apocalyptic Chicago are tested to determine their personalities before being separated into warring factions in this respectable Hunger Games clone based on Veronica Roth's bestselling trilogy. Shailene Woodley plays Tris, a so-called Divergent, who doesn't fit into any one group and is therefore seen as a danger to society. She doesn't mesh with the fearless "Dauntless" faction because she's too conflicted, but that makes her a threat to the budding fascist "Erudite" brigade, led by a subtly sinister Kate Winslet, who are looking for Divergents. Information overload afflicts this first episode, before becoming a moralistic slog through Tris's brutal initiation trials, and a romantic subplot (involving Theo James) doesn't add much intrigue. The visuals are rather drab and the action more brisk than imaginative, but there's enough menace and suspense to create an entertaining diversion, and director Neil Burger (Limitless) delivers a rousing finale.
