Director Trey Edward Shults cites Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, John Carpenter's The Thing and George A Romero's Night of the Living Dead as inspiration for his potent post-apocalypse thriller, so be prepared for creeping menace, infectious paranoia and dark deeds. An unspecified pandemic in an indeterminate future has decimated the population, forcing dour but resourceful dad Paul (Joel Edgerton) and his wife and son to take refuge in their remote but well-fortified woodland bolt hole. However, when an intruder out to provide for his own kin comes a-calling, Paul's rigorous routine and precautions begin to fray. Dripping with oppressive, unsettling dread, Shults's chiller delivers jolts and jitters rather than splatter and critters. Indeed, this is the sort of horror film in which man's inner demons are just as terrifying as anything lurking in the darkness outside.
