Antonio Banderas made the jump from Spanish star to international hunk with this, his first big English-language movie, a musical drama based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Oscar Hijuelos. Banderas and Armand Assante (American Gangster, star as two Cuban musicians who arrive in postwar America seeking love, fame and fortune. The film positively sizzles when the music gets going, and the mambo itself is as much a character in the movie as the actors. Director Arne Glimcher - this was his directorial debut - went on to make the Sean Connery thriller Just Cause.

Latin Lothario Antonio Banderas stars in his first English-speaking role as one of two musical Cuban brothers struggling to find fame and fortune in Fifties America with their self-styled salsa sound. Drama, with Armand Assante, Cathy Moriarty and Desi Arnaz Jnr.
