Review

Our Score
Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche make an unlikely romantic pairing in this uplifting comedy drama from director Peter Hedges (Pieces of April). Dan (Carell) is a middle-aged widower bringing up three daughters, while writing a family advice column for a city newspaper. They all think he's resigned to being single forever until a chance meeting in a bookshop with the alluring Marie (Binoche). But as luck would have it, Marie is already involved with Dan's brother Mitch (Dane Cook), leaving put-upon Dan to sweep his new-found love under the carpet during a boisterous family get-together at his parents' house. Milking the socially awkward set-up for tears as well as laughs, Hedges delivers a tender delight. Of course, nothing here bears much relation to "real life"; instead, it's a genteel fantasy about love, second chances and the healing power of family.

Summary

A widowed journalist and father-of-three falls in love at first sight with a woman he meets by chance. Later at a family get-together, he bumps into her again and is surprised to learn she is already dating his brother - an awkward situation that leaves them wrestling with their feelings while pretending never to have met. Romantic comedy, with Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, Dianne Wiest and Emily Blunt.
