This period drama is something of a departure for director John Irvin, who is more normally associated with action fare such as Raw Deal. Irvin makes the most of his stunning setting on the shores of Lake Como to tell the story of an unmarried middle-aged woman's last holiday in Italy before the outbreak of the Second World War. Vanessa Redgrave stars as the ageing Miss Bentley, whose flirtation with English major Edward Fox becomes more serious thanks to the intervention of American nanny Uma Thurman and the attentions of Italian youth Alessandro Gassman, who has a taste for older women. While nothing of importance happens, and Irvin gives little attention to emotional depth, the film's charm lies in its attention to small detail and the impeccable acting of Redgrave and her co-stars.

A single middle-aged Englishwoman spends a month her family's lakeside villa in Italy in 1937. She is romanced by a visiting British major, but a series of unforeseen events gets in the way and a younger American woman seems poised to come between them. Romantic period drama, starring Vanessa Redgrave, Uma Thurman, Edward Fox and Alessandro Gassman.
