Joshua Logan (1967)

U Certificate

Our Score
Despite Joshua Logan's stodgy staging, this sumptuous screen version of the Arthurian musical by Lerner and Loewe still pierces the heart in Excalibur fashion. Vanessa Redgrave as Guenevere convincingly enthrals both King Arthur (Richard Harris) and Lancelot (Franco Nero), and us. The stars may not be particularly tuneful (and it would have been interesting to see Richard Burton re-create his Broadway role), but they compensate for that with their dramatic and moving interpretation of the glorious songs. This ideal world corrupted by passion makes the Sean Connery/Richard Gere rendition First Knight look like little more than a charade.

King Arthur is happily married to Queen Guenevere, but the arrival of handsome knight Sir Lancelot leads to infidelity and betrayal. For a time, the king refuses to believe his wife is having an affair, but the lovers are betrayed by Arthur's son, the conniving Mordred. Oscar-winning musical based on the Arthurian legend, starring Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave, Franco Nero, David Hemmings and Lionel Jeffries.
