Review

Our Score
This sumptuous, if overlong, epic about the last days of the Russian Romanov dynasty, before the Bolsheviks executed Tsar Nicholas II and his family, shows the stretchmarks of too much padding, though Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman, as the Tsar and Tsarina, are a poignant reminder that a royal marriage can be both faithful and true. Adapted from the book by Robert K Massie, it overwhelms us with its detail, though Tom Baker is a lot of fun as the leering mystic Rasputin, and there are cameo appearances from Timothy West, Laurence Olivier and Michael Redgrave, among others. Master cameraman Freddie Young got an Oscar nomination for his gilt-edged photography, but it was the sterling art direction and costume design that were rewarded with statuettes.
