Review

Our Score
William Wyler's masterly film of Sinclair Lewis's novel, with Walter Huston, Ruth Chatterton, Mary Astor and David Niven giving wonderful performances. It's a full-blown romance with a darker edge, gleamingly shot and nominated for seven Oscars, winning one for art direction. Producer Sam Goldwyn was offered the book for $20,000 and turned it down, thinking it would make a lousy movie. Sidney Howard subsequently adapted it into a Broadway hit starring Huston and Fay Bainter, and Goldwyn ended up buying the screen rights for $165,000. "I don't understand," said Howard. "Two years ago you could have had it for $20,000." To which Goldwyn replied, "I don't care. This way I buy a successful play. Before it was just a novel."
