Pierce Brosnan makes an unconvincing job of playing Daniel Defoe's famous castaway in this dismally dumbed-down screen bowdlerisation. Ian Hart cameos as the novelist to set up the tale of shipwreck and survival, but the events that unfold in this dramatisation from co-directors Rod Hardy and George Miller often bear little resemblance to those in the novel. Much time is spent dwelling on Brosnan's relationships with Lysette Anthony and Polly Walker, while William Takaku's Friday is almost completely a figment of the screenwriters' imaginations.

Adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic shipwreck drama, starring Pierce Brosnan as the hero who gets marooned on a desert island. William Takaku co-stars as Man Friday, Crusoe's only companion, alongside Lysette Anthony and Ian Hart.
