Our Score
Prolific director Lesley Selander was one of the unsung heroes of the western. Starting out as a lab technician before becoming a cameraman, he got his break as a director in the mid-1930s thanks to his friendship with western star Buck Jones, with whom he made several films. In this workmanlike example of Selander's output, rugged Sterling Hayden stars as a deserter masquerading as an officer to help a wagon train through hostile territory. Red River's Coleen Gray plays the female lead and there's a nice early performance from Lee Van Cleef. But what makes this routine B-feature intriguing is the use of library footage from the 1951 Lew Ayres film New Mexico, even though it doesn't really match and effectively weakens the action sequences.
