Review

Our Score
Horror maestro Wes Craven, in his first non-fantasy film, here tells the true story of violin teacher Roberta Guaspari (Meryl Streep), who brought music and hope to the school kids of East Harlem. Sadly, the material is given a vacuous TV-movie treatment under Craven's restrained direction, and ends up as a bland mix of Fame and Dangerous Minds. Streep merely plays a parody of herself while salsa superstar Gloria Estefan is ineffectual in her feature debut. The reasonably rousing finale aside - a fundraiser at Carnegie Hall with Isaac Stern and Itzhak Perlman accompanying the students - this emotional concerto has too many flat notes to soar.

Summary

A violinist is taken on as a part-time teacher in a tough Harlem school. At first her students are hostile and unwilling, but in time she makes a breakthrough and connects with the teenagers through the power of music. All looks well for the future until the budget is cut, forcing her pupils and their parents to band together to prevent the department from going under. Fact-based drama, starring Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn and Angela Bassett. Directed by Wes Craven.
