Our Score
John Cusack gives a poignant turn as a loving father trying to protect his two young daughters from tragic news in this small and intimate drama, featuring a Golden Globe-nominated score by Clint Eastwood. Informed that his military wife has been killed in Iraq, the shell-shocked dad delays telling his girls, instead taking them on an impromptu road trip to a Florida amusement park. It's a slow and fragmented tale, barely plotted and containing far too many shots of either the family's car or those within it, but it movingly emphasises the preciousness of life's little moments. The wonderful kids (Gracie Bednarczyk and especially Shélan O'Keefe) are as natural as the adults as they shop, get their ears pierced and bounce on motel beds; their believable relationship with both Cusack and his under-used screen brother, Alessandro Nivola, enhanced by debut writer/director James C Strouse's commendably minimal sentimentality.
