Our Score
This rip-roaring throwback to the wartime adventures of old finds Matthew McConaughey as a rookie submarine skipper in charge of a crippled U-boat after a secret plot to steal an Enigma code machine from the Nazis goes pear-shaped in the middle of the Atlantic. Since it was British sailors who got hold of the Enigma, it's a tad galling to see the likes of Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel and Jon Bon Jovi take the credit. But all gripes are forgotten as McConaughey tries to outsmart a German destroyer with just a handful of torpedoes and a leaking sub. It's not a patch on Wolfgang Petersen's seminal Das Boot, but Jonathan Mostow's film does at least deliver its fair share of undemanding popcorn entertainment.
