Our Score
Indian cinema's greatest romantic team, Raj Kapoor and Nargis, light up the screen in this powerful study of class, kinship and criminality. Raised on the street because his judge father (Prithviraj Kapoor) believes he was conceived after his mother (Leela Chitnis) was raped by a vengeful bandit (KN Singh), Kapoor seeks to rekindle a childhood romance with Nargis. But her guardian is none other than his disapproving father, who stubbornly insists that, as the son of a thief, Kapoor can never escape his heredity. The influence of neorealism is readily evident in this trenchant exposé of slum life. But Kapoor invests his character with a Chaplin-like pathos, and there's a palpable sensuality to his scenes with Nargis (particularly after her swim in the sea). Shanker-Jaikishan's score is exceptional, with Ghar Aaya Mera Pardesi (sung by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar) making masala history as the first musical dream sequence.
