Review

Our Score
This admirably ambitious but poorly realised sci-fi thriller from British writer/director/actor Noel Clarke combines elements of Total Recall, The Bourne Identity and The Matrix. The action takes place in the near future, where an ex-soldier (Clarke) keeps waking up in different situations with absolutely no memory of what has happened during the intervening periods. Eventually, Ryan discovers that someone else is taking control of his mind and body during these intervals, and that he only has 9 minutes and 47 seconds each time he awakens as himself to take control of the situation. The fight scenes that punctuate the story are familiar and somewhat repetitive, but they're effectively staged and - unlike the vast majority of contemporary action flicks - you can actually tell who is punching whom. That, at least, makes for a refreshing change. In general, though, the film's promising premise is let down by ropey acting, inexplicable plot developments and clunky, exposition-heavy dialogue.

Summary

A traumatised former soldier wakes up in a strange place with no memory of how he got there, and immediately finds his life is in danger. As he goes on the run, he finds more sections of his memory being erased and discovers a sinister conspiracy. Sci-fi thriller, directed by and starring Noel Clarke, with Ian Somerhalder and Brian Cox.
