Our Score
Working from his own play, Neil Simon unusually fails to strike the right balance between wit and pathos in this strained study of a midlife crisis. Jack Lemmon pulls out all the stops as the executive who not only has to cope with being sacked after 22 years, but also with the evident delight with which wife Anne Bancroft embraces her new career at the local TV station. Gene Saks (who directed Lemmon in Simon's The Odd Couple) provides stiff support as his brother, while Sylvester Stallone pops up as an innocent bystander suspected of theft.

Inner-city life causes problems for a New York advertising executive and his wife. Neil Simon's black comedy, starring Jack Lemmon and Anne Bancroft, with cameos from Sylvester Stallone, F Murray Abraham and M Emmett Walsh.
