In this grim but satisfying drama, a gaunt Gary Cooper stars as an army major accused of cowardice during an expedition against Pancho Villa in 1916 Mexico. Cooper can only avoid disgrace if he recommends five men from his regiment who are worthy of receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor. There's a magnificent line-up of co-stars, including Rita Hayworth, Van Heflin and Richard Conte, along with teen idol Tab Hunter, but none of the characters they portray emerges with much credit as director Robert Rossen delves into issues of bravery and cowardice. The location photography (by Bonnie and Clyde's Burnett Guffey) is stunning and the overall effect richly rewarding.

A US Army officer, once branded a coward after hesitating during a battle, is entrusted with transporting a group of supposed military heroes on a long and gruelling trek back to base in 1916 Mexico. However, the men soon reveal their true and less than heroic colours, leaving the disgraced soldier to show them who is boss. Adventure, starring Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, Van Heflin and Richard Conte.
