Our Score
This superb follow-up to his own Gunfight at the OK Corral from director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape) starts where the previous movie climaxed and charts the moral decline of lawman Wyatt Earp from upright marshal to relentless avenger. He's portrayed brilliantly by a grim James Garner, in a far cry from his customary jolly screen image. Doc Holliday is also perfectly played by Jason Robards, providing a marvellous contrast to Garner's Earp. This movie, with its fine use of Panavision (from veteran cinematographer Lucien Ballard) and its memorable Jerry Goldsmith score, prefigures the darker, anti-romantic westerns that were to come, notably those of The Wild Bunch director Sam Peckinpah. Neglected on release, this movie can now be appreciated as a near masterwork, a requiem for the Old West, and certainly the old western. Watch for Jon Voight in a small role and screenwriter Edward Anhalt in a brief cameo as the doctor treating Holliday's tuberculosis.
