Review

Our Score
Director Richard Lester injected a much needed irreverence into Superman II, but can't quite sustain the humour for this instalment of the Man of Steel saga. There are a few neat touches, however, such as when Superman (Christopher Reeve) turns nasty, and the scenes where he returns to his hometown of Smallville are rather sweet. That said, the attempt to increase the laughter quotient by introducing Richard Pryor doesn't really work, and neither he nor Robert Vaughn prove to be an adequate replacement for Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor. Margot Kidder wanted little to do with this sequel and must have been thankful only to get a look-in as Lois Lane, while Pamela Stephenson would probably rather forget her role as Vaughn's dumb girlfriend. But for fans of superhero action this is still enjoyable enough entertainment.
