Our Score
Rather than examining the boxing prowess of Muhammad Ali, director Clare Lewins's documentary takes a different look at "The Greatest" using archive footage, interviews and, in particular, never-before-revealed personal recordings to chronicle his life, career and legend. Narrated anecdotally by those closest to him (brother, daughters, manager, fans), the film is understandably extremely affectionate, throwing the spotlight on his many strengths while quickly glossing over his weaknesses (his goading of arch rival Joe Frazier, the ill-advised comeback fights). Lewins does, however, deliver some insight into the man's personality - his emphasis on the family unit, the importance of Islam in his life, a surprising sensitivity, and a remarkable sense of his own destiny (Ali makes many references to "making history" in the footage). There have been far more detailed and objective examinations, most notably William Klein's Muhammad Ali, the Greatest, but I Am Ali at least gives a fascinating glimpse into the private side of one of history's most public personalities.

Summary

The film features unprecedented access to the heavyweight champion's personal archives and journals, and features interviews and testimonials with family and friends, as well as contributions from fellow boxers including Mike Tyson, George Foreman and Gene Kilroy.
