Our Score
Imagine Bernard Manning as a teddy bear - that's the essence of this off-the-wall and very vulgar comedy from Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane, who also provides the voice for Ted. A few will be appalled, but the filth that spills from this pot-smoking bear's furry mouth is balanced by his deep devotion to his owner, a 30-something slacker played by Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg takes to the role with puppyish naivety - John is loyal to a fault because Ted helped him through a tough childhood. The fact that Ted can walk and talk (and swear) is the least astonishing part of the story; it simply adds a hilarious twist to a conventional battle of wills between John and girlfriend Mila Kunis over his refusal to grow up. MacFarlane takes each joke to the extreme and rarely kills it, because the premise is so outlandish to start with. For the same reason, the rude gags don't feel as harsh or offensive as they might, although Giovanni Ribisi, as Ted's stalker, turns the humour a shade darker, making you laugh and wince simultaneously.
