Our Score
There is no doubt where the fun lies in this sentimental comedy, and that is in the brief sight of hopefuls Michael Caine and Oliver Reed playing second fiddle to Norman Wisdom. Coming towards the end of his purple patch, Wisdom is not at his best as the fumbling shop assistant whose career in the navy culminates in an ill-fated moonshot. The script does him few favours, however, restricting the opportunities for slapstick in order to accommodate the surplus plot. Dependable stooges do all that is expected, with Edward Chapman at his bullying best as Wisdom's grocer boss.

A bumbling grocer is rejected by the woman of his dreams, plunging him into misery. He decides to get over his heartbreak by joining the Navy, and despite his ineptitude, is selected by an admiral to become Britain's first astronaut. Comedy, starring Norman Wisdom, Ian Hunter, David Lodge and John Le Mesurier.
