Our Score
Rome's Ray Stevenson takes over the role of ex-marine Frank Castle in the third attempt to launch the Marvel Comics vigilante hero as a viable franchise. This time the source material is the harder-edged Punisher Max series, and the tragic events that explain Castle's crime vendetta are dealt with more briefly here than in the 2004 film, which starred Thomas Jane. The plot sees Castle setting his sights on the ruthless Jigsaw (Dominic West) after the hideously disfigured Mob boss causes him to kill an undercover FBI agent. It all boils down, in simplistic fashion, to good-versus-evil pulp fiction, with the dialogue comically bad and the graphic gore vicious and unrelenting. Yet director Lexi Alexander (Green Street) brings independent movie flair to her neon-washed violent escapism, its swift-paced, brainless energy scoring high on the quality trash level. Stevenson's performance is robotically one-note (although his DIY surgery on his nose with a pencil is a hilarious highpoint); West is suitably nasty, sporting his monstrously patchworked face; and Doug Hutchison (unforgettable as Eugene Tooms in The X-Files TV series) has a ball playing Jigsaw's deranged brother.

The ruthless vigilante considers hanging up his guns when he learns a gangster he killed was actually an undercover FBI agent. However, he must return to his war on crime when a mobster who was hideously disfigured at his hands assembles a gang of violent criminals to cause mayhem on the streets of New York. Action thriller based on the Marvel comic-book, starring Ray Stevenson and Dominic West.
