Our Score
Kidnappers turn an American family's Spanish holiday into a nightmare, but even more shocking for eldest son Will (Henry Cavill) is what he learns about his stern father (Bruce Willis) in this fish-out-of-water thriller. As the understandably confused Cavill finds himself running from mystery gunmen, and facing a ransom demand for the return of his mother and brother, it's no surprise that the taciturn Willis turns out to be an undercover CIA agent and all the mayhem is his fault. From this revelation onwards, the movie barrels its way through an over-familiar series of punch-ups, shoot-outs, close scrapes, and car chases - all competently assembled, but utterly devoid of any fresh spark of invention. Yes, it's pacey, the plot never gets too stupid, and the Madrid locations look the part, but Cavill proves an identikit square-jawed hero and Sigourney Weaver's clearly coasting as a CIA handler who may not be all she seems. A time-passer for all concerned, the audience included.
