Our Score
Blending 33 songs by the Beatles and all manner of visual tricks, director Julie Taymor (Frida) evokes a psychedelic 1960s vibe to tell a vibrant yet convoluted story of star-crossed lovers. In a nod to a couple of well-known Fab Four songs, British actor Jim Sturgess plays a Liverpudlian painter named Jude who heads to the US and falls for a free spirit called Lucy (indie favourite Evan Rachel Wood). But young love is threatened by artistic angst and a backdrop of political turmoil in America. There are depictions of anti-war rallies and the faltering civil rights movement, but Taymor doesn't emphasise those themes so much as drown them out in colour and music. Many will enjoy what is a veritable feast for the senses and the leads are easy to root for - just don't expect it to rock your world in any profound way.
