Guns of Fort Petticoat

Guns of Fort Petticoat

George Marshall (1957)

Our Score
Audie Murphy launched his own production company with this intriguing slant on the western siege theme. Branded a coward for refusing to participate in the Sand Creek massacre, Murphy heads for Texas to forge a band of seemingly defenceless women into a fighting force. It's steadily directed by old stager George Marshall and the Indian attack on the fortified mission should keep action fans happy. But Walter Doniger's screenplay is keener to explore the unsung heroism of the frontierswoman (although he can't resist a romance between Murphy and the feisty Kathryn Grant) and provides meaty roles for the likes of Hope Emerson and Jeannette Nolan.

A lieutenant deserts after his commanding officer launches an unprovoked attack on a Comanche village during the Civil War. Realising that there are no soldiers in his home town to protect it from reprisals, he returns to train the local women to defend themselves. Western, starring Audie Murphy, Kathryn Grant, Hope Emerson and Jeff Donnell.
