Review

Our Score
A gritty, trenchant film that burst upon the late 1950s and stirred a hornet's nest of controversy for its treatment of sex as passionate rather than a merely procreative exercise. Laurence Harvey is at his slit-eyed, manipulative, lizard-like best as the ambitious antihero of John Braine's novel, with Simone Signoret glorious and sexy as his ill-fated mistress. For once, the north is portrayed as a shade more complicated than previous "flat cap and whippet" outings had shown, in a movie that perfectly captures the gradual demise of Victorian morality and traditional class culture. You can almost smell the coming 1960s in the air.
