Our Score
If you want to remove the comedy, pithy insights, energy and spirit from the work of stage maestro Alan Ayckbourn, your first choice of director should be Michael Winner. The very idea of Winner employing his customary sledgehammer to Ayckbourn's subtle drama is surreal in the extreme. And, as expected, the director lumbers his way through a text from which odd moments of social satire escape untouched, but more by good luck than design. He even manages to draw unflattering performances from several British notables (including Richard Briers, Sylvia Syms, Lionel Jeffries and Jeremy Irons), though Anthony Hopkins brings some force and flourish to his role as an amateur theatre director.
