Legend of the Lost

Our Score
Big John Wayne here plays hard-drinking Joe January, not out west this time, but engaged as a guide by explorer Rossano Brazzi to search for Saharan treasure. Sophia Loren provides the obligatory love interest as a street girl looking for adventure. The Libyan locations are the main reason for watching, unless you particularly enjoy seeing major stars make major fools of themselves. Wayne's friend Henry Hathaway directed, but this languid travelogue is no True Grit. The premise must have seemed like fun, but unfortunately what should have been a romp is taken far too seriously.

A grizzled adventurer living in Timbuktu is hired to escort a mysterious explorer across the Sahara desert in search of a fabled lost city. A local woman joins the men on their quest, but when the trio reach their destination the explorer reveals his plan to betray his companions and leave them high and dry. Adventure, starring John Wayne, Sophia Loren and Rossano Brazzi.
