Review

Our Score
Director KS Adiyaman's remake of his own Tamil hit, Thotta Chinungi, has finally been released after a protracted shoot spanning six years. What emerges is a typically convoluted story in which ageing Alok Nath is left to rear the orphaned children of his best friend as well as his own grandchildren. In time, his favourite grandchild (Madhuri Dixit) marries her devoted "stepbrother" (Shah Rukh Khan). However, their happiness is short-lived, as Khan becomes increasingly jealous of Dixit's relationship with a childhood friend (Salman Khan). Nuance isn't a Bollywood speciality, and there's little in the way of subtle shading here but, with its impressive all-star cast and songs from some of India's leading composers, this enjoyable melodrama can't be beaten for big, bold emotion.
