Our Score
Crank co-director Mark Neveldine flies solo for the first time (from regular partner Brian Taylor) with this serviceable if derivative tale of demonic possession. Olivia Taylor Dudley (Chernobyl Diaries, Paranormal Activity: the Ghost Dimension) stars as the wide-eyed innocent, whose seemingly ordinary life goes awry after a car accident puts her in a coma for 40 days. Local Catholic priest Michael Peña suspects something supernatural is brewing, particularly when a cop sticks light bulbs in the wrong sort of socket after visiting the young woman. Neveldine is blessed with a decent budget and cast (that also includes Dougray Scott and Djimon Hounsou), but when spooky birds swoop about and a portentous old priest turns up to exorcise what ails Dudley, it's devilish fare like The Exorcist and The Omen that rush to mind. Those classics had thrills and gore galore. This is just too tame to terrify.

Summary

A woman seems to be at the centre of a series of unexplainable events, resulting in death and destruction for anyone around her. The Vatican concludes she is possessed by a demon, and a priest is assigned to exorcise her - but he discovers the creature inhabiting her body is older and more powerful than anyone suspects, and could prove a threat to the entire world. Horror, starring Olivia Taylor Dudley, Michael Pena and Dougray Scott.
