Our Score
Writer/director Paul WS Anderson seems stuck on repeat, as wife Milla Jovovich's zombie-slaying heroine Alice returns for a glossy yet tedious fifth instalment in the video game-based franchise. Creating a permanent sense of déjà vu, Anderson swaps coherent narrative for an unimaginative procession of explosions, gunfire and gore, with Alice encountering figures from her past (including an amusing Michelle Rodriguez) as she races to escape from the virus-spawning Umbrella Corporation's underground research facility. With this mainly involving set-piece battles through an undead-populated series of simulated test environments - Tokyo, suburban America, etc - the film is like looking over the shoulder of someone playing on their Xbox: an unsatisfyingly detached experience that's compounded by the predominantly stiff acting and disposable characters. Granted, Anderson tries to add an emotional dimension, giving Alice a maternal relationship lifted from James Cameron's Aliens, but it's too undernourished to make much impact. Even the souped-up mutant zombies barely register, leaving only Jovovich's vigour and visual appeal to sustain proceedings.

Zombie fighter Alice finds herself trapped in a top-secret underground base as a virus sweeps the world, turning the human race into the undead. She battles through the complex in search of those responsible for the outbreak and faces an old friend, now under the control of her enemies. Sci-fi thriller sequel, starring Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory and Michelle Rodriguez.
