Our Score
Director Sidney Lumet's penultimate film stars Vin Diesel as Jackie DiNorscio, the oafish but charismatic mobster who decided to represent himself in one of the longest trials in American history. Lumet opts to portray this true story as a light comedy, although the film does have its serious moments, too. Told through the eyes of DiNorscio, a man for whom loyalty is far more important than any court or sentence, it gradually develops into a court-based underdog story. The broad "wiseguy" stereotypes and courtroom setting become repetitive, especially given the long running time. However, Diesel's surprising comic timing gives the film an appeal it might not otherwise have had, and he also handles the more dramatic final scenes capably. It's far from Lumet's best work, but Find Me Guilty is a playful take on an interesting true story, and reveals a different side to a star often associated with action roles.
