The Fly

The Fly

David Cronenberg (1986)

18 Certificate

Our Score
It's easy to see why visceral visionary David Cronenberg wanted to remake the landmark 1958 chiller about scientific experiments in molecular teleportation. This plunges into the same primal territory he explored in Shivers, Rabid and Videodrome, regurgitating his deep-seated fears of ageing, disease, deformity and the beast within. Only Cronenberg can get away with working out his raw phobias on screen while being poignantly witty and repulsively entertaining at the same time. Jeff Goldblum's sensitive performance takes the edge off the grisly special effects, but many will still find it hard to get past the gore.

A scientist invents a teleportation machine, but as he prepares to test the apparatus on himself he is unaware that a housefly is inside the system with him. The experiment causes his body to splice genetically with the insect, leading to a terrifying and grotesque transformation. David Cronenberg's remake of the 1950s horror, starring Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis and John Getz.
