Opening with the shocking revelation that a baby girl who was presumed stillborn has, in fact, been hidden away in an institution by her embarrassed father, Mani Ratnam's deeply moving drama was one of the first Indian features to address the issue of mental health. Filmed with sensitive realism by Madhu Ambat, the devoted care of the young Shamili by her mother, Revathi, and "guardian angel" Prabhu stands in stark contrast to the ignorance and prejudice of their neighbours. But the mood lightens during the Ilayaraaja-scored dance sequences, which are a knowing blend of kitsch and trendy music-video visuals.

A woman struggles to cope after being told her baby was stillborn, but eventually manages to put the tragedy behind her and carry on until years later, when the revelation of a shocking secret dredges up the painful past. Drama, starring Revathi, Baby Shamili and Raghuvaran.
