Our Score
In what must be the ultimate "revenge of the nerds" story, six maths students from MIT crunch numbers at the gaming tables of Las Vegas - and nearly break the bank. Young British actor Jim Sturgess brings a winning charm to the role of Ben, the lead player who agrees to the card-counting scam proposed by his professor (a menacing Kevin Spacey) in order to fund his education. As the jackpot swells, however, so does his head, and that's where Ben's moral learning curve really begins. Although based on Ben Mezrich's bestselling non-fiction account, the film plays fast and loose with the facts, adding a clich├ęd romance and an over-plotted revenge thriller element. Sturgess keeps the story anchored, however, and director Robert Luketic should get credit for the gaming scenes, which buzz with tension and excitement.
