Our Score
JB Priestley's 1929 novel was first filmed in 1933 with John Gielgud and Jessie Matthews. This version, directed by J Lee Thompson, has a glittering array of female talent, including Celia Johnson, Joyce Grenfell, Rachel Roberts, Thora Hird and Janette Scott. The men - Eric Portman, John Fraser, Hugh Griffith, Alec McCowen and Anthony Newley - are less showy but still manage to prove how British movies of the time could cast in depth without having to offer roles to the acting knights of the realm. The story, about a concert party, has dated, and it's all a bit too polite, but the cast makes it well worth watching.
