The extraordinary life of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is told in fierce style here by Titus director Julie Taymor, who cleverly fuses the vivid events of Kahlo's turbulent existence with the stark images of her uncompromising self-portraits. Salma Hayek gives a career-best performance as the bisexual bohemian Marxist, whose physical suffering - a near-fatal tram accident in 1925 left her in constant pain - infused her challenging work. Charting her many affairs - with Josephine Baker and Leon Trotsky, among others - but mainly her stormy marriage to womanising artist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), Taymor's visually inventive narrative is both a riveting history lesson and a celebration of the artistic revolution in which Kahlo participated. With excellent support from Valeria Golino (as Rivera's first wife) and Edward Norton (as Nelson Rockefeller), this is a stunning exploration of artistic agony and ecstasy.

Oscar-winning biopic of talented Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, examining her enduring relationship with husband and mentor, the womanising muralist Diego Rivera, her own scandalous affairs, and her celebrated position at the centre of the art world. Starring Salma Hayek, Valeria Golino, Mia Maestro, Roger Rees, Diego Luna and Alfred Molina.
