Our Score
The myth of the Loch Ness Monster is the starting point for this charming fantasy adventure, adapted from the novel by Babe author Dick King-Smith. Set in the Scottish Highlands during the Second World War, it's the story of a lonely young boy called Angus (Alex Etel), who discovers a mysterious egg near the local loch. He takes it home and, inevitably, it hatches into a cute little monster that soon outgrows the house. Complicating matters is artillery commander Captain Hamilton (David Morrissey), who is determined to put a submarine net across the loch. There are similarities here to ET - particularly as Angus attempts to conceal the beastie from his mum (Emily Watson). But Jay Russell's film also treats its audience with a degree of sophistication, particularly in the boy's growing realisation that his father may not be coming home from the war. A few sequences here may be too alarming for very young children, but otherwise this is almost perfect family entertainment.

Summary

A lonely boy living in the Scottish Highlands during the Second World War stumbles on a curiously large egg by the water's edge of the local loch. Astonishingly, it hatches into a cute baby sea monster and, although he tries his hardest to keep it concealed, the task is made almost impossible by the creature's alarming rate of growth. Children's fantasy adventure, based on the book by Dick King-Smith, with Alex Etel, Emily Watson and David Morrissey.
