Our Score
Sydney Pollack must have known before he embarked on this remake of Billy Wilder's 1954 comedy classic, that the ghosts of Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and William Holden would be hovering over his production. Yet, with canny casting and some subtle updating, he succeeded in coming up with a charming variation on this Cinderella story, in which the chauffeur's daughter romances the billionaire boss. Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford take a while to settle into their roles, unlike Greg Kinnear, who gives a vibrant debut performance as Ford's brattish brother. Fans of the original won't be satisfied, but, by the end, there's no doubt Pollack achieves a sparkle to match the picture's undoubted polish.

Summary

A chauffeur's daughter falls for the womanising son of her father's employer, but he ignores her. However, after a long sojourn in Paris, she returns, having matured into a beautiful and poised young woman. The handsome playboy is totally smitten - even though he is on the verge of getting married. So to save the wedding, his older brother tries to romance her himself. Remake of Billy Wilder's romantic comedy, with Harrison Ford, Julia Ormond and Greg Kinnear.
