Our Score
Kermit the Frog rounds up the gang to save the Muppets' derelict old theatre from a ruthless tycoon in this laugh-out-loud return to the enduring TV characters' roots. Aided by a couple of humans (co-writer Jason Segel and an adorable Amy Adams) and their new Muppet pal Walter, our fuzzy heroes struggle to stage a money-spinning telethon on the site of their former triumphs. But will an indifferent modern-day public take them to their hearts again? Although he aims the laughs primarily at a younger audience, director James Bobin (a veteran of edgier small-screen comedies such as Flight of the Conchords) packs the film with just enough retro references and subversive humour to strike a chord with grown-ups who will remember the show from their own childhood. The intentionally bad gags and lively musical numbers (including three fantastic new songs from Conchords star Bret McKenzie) help maintain a brisk pace, a stony-faced Chris Cooper relishes his role as evil industrialist Tex Richman, while there's much fun to be had spotting the sparingly used celebrity cameos.
