Our Score
Al Pacino and Robert De Niro share the screen for only the second time here, but unlike their explosive pairing in Michael Mann's Heat in 1995, this thriller finds them on the same side of the law. They play veteran New York cops assigned to investigate a series of vigilante killings that may have a connection to one of their old cases. But it's their approach to policing that raises a deeper moral question. Sadly, director Jon Avnet and writer Russell Gewirtz (Inside Man) are also guilty of taking a heavy-handed approach. There are more killings than you can be bothered to count and not much pause for thought in between. Perhaps the biggest missed opportunity comes, ironically, from giving Pacino and De Niro too much screen time together. Past evidence suggests they create more sparks as adversaries, not buddies, and with such a slapdash plot, there is a total lack of suspense. The real crime is that two cinematic legends are wasted in such reckless style.

Two veteran New York detectives are assigned the case of a murdered pimp. They realise they are dealing with a vigilante dishing out lethal punishment to those who have escaped the justice system, and as more dead criminals are found, they suspect the killer may be a fellow cop. Crime thriller, starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Carla Gugino, John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg.
