Review

Our Score
As feature debuts go, they don't come much better than Minnie Driver's in this romantic drama. She not only holds together this amiable adaptation of Maeve Binchy's novel, but she positively lights up the screen as Benny, the country girl who has to abandon her Dublin education (and rugby star Chris O'Donnell) to work in the family shop and fight off the unwanted attentions of the wonderfully smarmy Alan Cumming. Colin Firth is overly mannered as the Protestant landlord and director Pat O'Connor slips in too many emerald vistas, but the story is told with wit and charm.

Summary

A naive Irish woman joins two lifelong friends at university in 1950s Dublin where, against the wishes of her strict parents, she falls for a dashing rugby player. Meanwhile, her pals - socially ambitious Nan and the more cautious Eve - pursue romances of their own. Drama, based on Maeve Binchy's novel, with Minnie Driver, Saffron Burrows, Geraldine O'Rawe, Chris O'Donnell and Colin Firth.
