After an infamous flop with ex-wife Madonna (
) and a futile stab at intellectual credibility (
), Guy Ritchie returned to the familiar world of comic crime capers here. With a higher calibre cast of known talents and rising stars, it's another shaggy dog tale of the kind with which he made his name in
Lock, Stock ...
. Gerard Butler plays One Two, a low-ranking criminal who finds himself in hock to vicious hoodlum Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson) after a property deal goes wrong. To pay him back, One Two and sidekick Mumbles (Idris Elba) connive to sting a super-rich Russian, little realising that Cole has his own deal going with the oligarch. The stage is set for a tough-guy showdown, but sadly Ritchie sacrifices the bleaker side of things in favour of laddish camaraderie. Still, his visual energy makes up the shortfall, and a subplot involving a scheming junkie pop star (Toby Kebbell) is one of his most twisted and inspired yet.
A Russian mob boss sets up a profitable real-estate scam in London and soon every criminal in the city is after their share. The gangster's accountant hires a trio of crooks to take his boss's millions, while a rock star with a penchant for faking his own death causes further mayhem by stealing a valuable painting. Guy Ritchie's crime comedy, starring Gerard Butler, Tom Wilkinson and Thandie Newton.
