Our Score
Stranger than Fiction writer Zach Helm makes his directorial debut with this family-friendly tale of an enchanted toy store. Dustin Hoffman hams it up as the eponymous 243-year-old proprietor, whose time on Earth is running out. He plans to pass the baton to his young assistant (a cutesy turn by Natalie Portman), but she has her heart set on becoming a composer. As you'd expect, the setting allows Helm to conjure up a colourful array of bells and whistles, but the paper-thin yarn fails to draw you in. Helm provides no context for the existence of the toy shop where supernatural shenanigans are an everyday occurrence, and he loses a vital sense of wonder when he veers from the point of view of the story's young narrator Eric (Zach Mills). Sadly, there's just not enough magic here to make it memorable.

Summary

The 243-year-old owner of an enchanted toy shop realises he is soon to die, so decides to hand the business on to his assistant, who tries to persuade him to carry on living. Meanwhile, an accountant who has been called in to calculate how much the business is worth refuses to believe in the store's magical nature - even as it reacts badly to the thought of losing its owner. Fantasy comedy, with Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman.
