Review

Our Score
A commercial bomb, whose $250 million pre-marketing budget and failure at the US box office decimated Disney's operating profits and scalped the studio's head, sci-fi fantasy John Carter is not the disaster its reputation suggests. Based on A Princess of Mars, the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom stories published in 1917, it sees Confederate Civil War veteran Carter (pretty-boy Taylor Kitsch from TV's Friday Night Lights) transported to Mars. Once there, he discovers superhuman strength and the hero inside himself; rescuing a feisty princess (Lynn Collins) from a marriage arranged to ease a ceasefire between two Martian races, and leading the Thark warriors against the evil Warhoons. Taken at face value, its self-evidently old-fashioned, earnest, Boys' Own approach provides harmless, family-friendly fun - more Jason and the Argonauts than Avatar. Its plot is thin, and director Andrew Stanton (WALL-E) seems out of sorts with live actors, but there is action aplenty and a very funny CGI dog creature called Woola.
