Ball of Fire

Ball of Fire

Howard Hawks (1941)

U Certificate

Our Score
Scintillating and hysterically funny update of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, featuring Barbara Stanwyck as Sugarpuss O'Shea, a moll on the run who falls in with a group of wacky academics working on a language dictionary. Gawky, lovable Gary Cooper is the professor quizzing fireball Babs (hence the title) about contemporary slang. Genius director Howard Hawks creates a minor comic masterpiece from the witty screenplay by Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett, and all the performances are spot-on. There's also a treat as Stanwyck performs Drum Boogie with percussion king Gene Krupa.

Some stuffy professors realise that their work is not appreciated because they do not know how to communicate with everyday people. They find an unexpected teacher in the shape of a cabaret singer, who needs a place to hide from gangsters trying to stop her testifying in a murder trial. Howard Hawks' comedy, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper.
